Meet Corrie Bauer-Fitzsimons, LCSW

Compassionate Care for Emotional Wellbeing

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Durham, North Carolina, and I have 20 years of experience providing both long and short term therapy. I practice within a psychoanalytical, psychodynamic foundation. I am an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) therapist and utilize EMDR for trauma processing. My practice is also informed by IFS (Internal Family Systems) theory, and our work together may incorporate parts work through this framework.

I view psychotherapy as a natural response to the challenges and transitions of life. I am purposeful about being a careful listener. I strive to provide a safe, supportive, and understanding environment for people to explore their concerns as openly as possible. My style is collaborative and interactive, as I also offer insight, interpretations, and different points of view if I think it could be helpful. I work together with clients to create a process that fully respects the individual needs and comfort level of each person.

As a psychotherapist I provide comprehensive therapy services for issues such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Trauma
  • Life Transitions
  • Chronic Disappointment
  • The Desire to Improve Your Wellbeing
  • Abuse and Oppression
  • Relationship Challenges
  • Attachment and Family of Origin Issues
  • Grief & Loss

My practice is LGBTQ+ welcoming and affirming.

About Therapy

Psychotherapy Is a process of discovery where client and therapist work collaboratively to build awareness and understanding about issues and difficulties. Addressing and resolving conflicts can improve quality of life.

Various clinicians practice different methods of psychotherapy. I prefer and employ an approach that values understanding the origins of issues, not just targeting symptoms. I believe that being curious about and attempting to understand underlying causes of undesirable symptoms creates longer term, more sustainable change. In doing so, symptoms are therefore also resolved.

What leads someone to seek psychotherapy varies anywhere from experiencing a crisis to a lifelong issue that has become intolerable. Some of the common issues addressed in therapy are:

  • Life Transitions
  • Relationship Issues
  • Grief & Loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • LGBTQ Issues
  • Long-standing Sadness or Emptiness
  • Eating Disorders
  • Coping with Anger
  • Parenting Issues
